My Work
I like to think of my work as an assortment of distinct puzzles and challenges, all concerned with grasping something outside the monotony of daily life to put things in perspective. I’ve found that abstract, absurdist dramatic literature and science-based theatre are the perfect vehicles to do just that. Through my work, I’ve discovered the importance of communication, connection, and continuity in shaping an audience’s understanding of and connection to a piece of dramatic literature. I’m primarily interested in seeing how audience members feel when viewing a piece that defies one or several of those conventions and how that affects viewers’ experiences. By neglecting to follow the typical frameworks and/or themes present in the theatrical experience, matters are often put in perspective and things that are often taken for granted, such as the roles of human contact and kinship, are examined.
My decision-making processes largely entails focusing on symbolism and honoring the overarching themes and messages prevalent in the pieces that I’ve worked on. When human contact and continuity break down, it’s essential to let themes and less literal movements guide a piece towards meaning rather than tangible relationships and distinct events. When selecting pieces, I often lean towards looking at early pieces by Sam Shepard and Samuel Beckett for inspiration, as many of their works such as Action and Endgame respectively yearn for something greater than the monotony of daily life. In the future, I hope to find ways to implement science and human discoveries about the universe into my work. The objectivity and magical uniqueness of scientific occurrences brilliantly reflects how small humanity is in the context of the universe and what that means for the connections that we hold dear.
